advantages of Laparoscopy

Laparoscopic surgery for colon and rectal cancer took a significant step forward in gaining widespread acceptance after the large COST study published in May 2004. The results of this study demonstrated that although laparoscopic colon surgery is technically much more challenging, its therapeutic effectiveness in colon cancer is comparable to that of open surgery.

Moreover, laparoscopic surgery is associated with considerably fewer short-term complications compared to open surgery. These benefits include less postoperative pain, lower rates of wound infection, and fewer respiratory infections following surgery.

Laparoscopic surgery offers all these advantages while providing comparable cancer surgery outcomes and long-term survival rates to open surgery. Following this study, numerous similar research projects have been conducted confirming the benefits of laparoscopic surgery in patients with colon and rectal cancers.

Frequently asked Questions

You might have these questions too.

How is laparoscopic surgery performed?

After your visit and examination by the doctor, and a thorough review of your tests and evaluations, if you are deemed suitable for laparoscopic surgery, the doctor will recommend laparoscopic surgery for your colon or rectum. You will then be considered a candidate for this type of surgery for colon and rectal diseases.

Depending on the type of surgery and the underlying condition, the recovery period may vary. However, in general, the hospital stay, recovery time, and return to normal life and work are significantly shorter with laparoscopic surgery compared to open surgery.

Today, approximately 99% of patients with colon and rectal cancer are eligible for laparoscopic surgery, which results in significantly fewer complications and a much faster return to work.

Rectal cancer, due to its location in the pelvis, offers very limited visibility during open surgery and is associated with a long recovery time. In contrast, laparoscopic tools provide better visualization of the surgical field and result in significantly fewer complications.
